Simplification.

Hi. I thought i'd start out any discussion about Features with a sober discussion about simplicity. I'm responsible for the PublicEarth website, and so if you want to talk about features you've come…

CEO, PublicEarth

I joined PublicEarth full time in August, 2009-- as Chief Product Officer -- and became CEO in February 2010.

What can i say: I'm a geek. I grew up with a rock and fossil collection, and a shelf that extended the length of my room that was a band of yellow -- every issue of National Geographic that arrived in our home for more than a decade. I extracted the maps from the special issues, and they decorated my walls (organized by scale). I like maps. Always have.

Today I have a wide range of interests -- including (but not limited to) movies, business, technology -- longest of those is photography, followed closely by publishing. I've written and/or published about a dozen books: Most recently DROIDMAKER, the story of George Lucas and the creation of Pixar. I designed editing systems, and edited movies and television for many years - a high point of that career was working with Bernardo Bertolucci in London, making The Sheltering Sky. I was also co-founder and CEO of Petroglyph Ceramic Lounge, one of the companies that pioneered pottery painting studios back in the early 1990s.

Bottom line: I love creating things, designing interfaces, writing and teaching, developing ideas and making them tangible. My last job was as one of the architects of the website at Netflix.

Real World Use. A Trip to SF

There are many ways to use PublicEarth. I thought I'd share a real world case that came up yesterday, mostly because it nicely illustrated what PublicEarth can do. I don't think i could have solved my location problems with any other tool quite this easily.

ISSUE: I have two meetings on Friday in San Francisco and I'm trying to juggle locations.

1. The first meeting has an address. I go to CREATE and add a pin at that address. Very useful.
2. The second meeting person sugge… Continue

Simplification.

Hi Friends,
Over the next few weeks we are beginning a process of radical simplification of the website. For the most part, we don't think you'll miss some of the things we're going to subordinate (usually this will mean moving links from being prominent to being slightly more out of sight). The net result should be a website that is clearer, and cleaner, and faster for doing the things that most of you are doing.

The second part of this process is going to make it MUCH easier to ma… Continue

We've also updated the awards on your Profile page: now when you hover over an award we… Continue

My Friends' PlaceBooks...

I was looking at my PlaceBook, into which I've got about 60 places saved, and i switched over my view to look at the collective PlaceBooks of my Friends. Now I only have a few friends connected here, but it didn't matter: I was immediately presented with maybe a hundred points that they had saved.

What happened next happened somewhat autonomically: I… Continue

Mike - I got out of the habit of checking your Droidmaker blog for a while there, and then... Look what happened. You're off on another adventure here with PublicEarth. Very cool. I am still exploring. I have not figured out how to access your Places yet. BTW are you planning to be in Providence at the end of May, by any chance. I'll be there with the family. I figure, since I missed all the previous reunions I should at least show up for the 25th.

I'm an amateur fossil hunter; i grew up in the creekbeds of central florida, but I've found interesting public/semi-public locations where great fossils can be found. I hope others will share local digs.
