PublicEarth

The Wiki For Places

There are many ways to use PublicEarth. I thought I'd share a real world case that came up yesterday, mostly because it nicely illustrated what PublicEarth can do. I don't think i could have solved my location problems with any other tool quite this easily.

ISSUE: I have two meetings on Friday in San Francisco and I'm trying to juggle locations.

1. The first meeting has an address. I go to CREATE and add a pin at that address. Very useful.
2. The second meeting person suggests a location, a popular cafe. I don't know SF well, so I search for the cafe and save it. Seems like a really good place.
3. Looking at these places in my PlaceBook (I check them both) shows me they aren't as close together as I thought. I get directions. I see they are too far to walk between and too close to drive... I need a different cafe for the second meeting.
4. I search for "parking" and see all the places between these two locations. What's nice (and simple) is that each time i find something, i can hold it on the map to orient the next search. I find a parking structure near the first meeting. Clearly, I need a location for the second meeting near this area.
5. I search for "cafes" near these locations. Many results. I glance through them (the hover is nice, I don't have to click). One seems interesting. I save it.
6. A pop up appears to ask if I want to share this place. In fact I do: I post it to my Facebook page asking if anyone has been there and can recommend it - or something like it nearby.
7. In a matter of moments I have confirmation that it's good.
8. I email that location to the second meeting person, and suggest it as an alternative -- recommended and far more convenient for my schedule.

I really don't think I could have done all that so easily in Google or Yelp. I don't need that kind of location-based research all the time, but when I do, PublicEarth is a good tool.
